Thanksgiving Day – Leap Frog Fridge Phonics

We had a wonderful weekend with our family this Thanksgiving.  Lots of family, love, games, food, fun and giving thanks.  We are grateful for each and every one in our family, and we also give thanks for the “family” who frequents our website, or gives us a phone call, or sends us a letter requesting our help on how to help students learn to read.

The youngest of our 29 grandchildren is 4 years old.  He loves books, trucks, cowboy hats and watching video’s….just like any 4 year old!

What we observed last evening was his interest in “Fridge Phonics.”  It was stuck to one of the lower cupboards and he was pushing the letter “A” into a plastic yellow bus and I heard a recorded sound “A says aah … that’s the sound of the letter A.”  I was fascinated.  He picked up each letter of the alphabet and pushed it into the yellow bus on the cabinet door, and the each time  he heard the “sound” of the letter that he pushed.  Phonemic awareness!!  YES!!!!  What a great gift for any young child.

We can get so “complicated” and so “sophisticated” about learning to read, can’t we?  Now please don’t misunderstand me, there is MUCH more to learning to read, to spell, to write and to understand the words we encounter.  But really, it all starts with a recognition that if we learn the sounds the letters represent we have a head start on learning to spell accurately and read proficiently.

My Grandson is also in “pre-school” and he is learning all of the letter sounds and how they blend into words.  Still, this little “toy” was a great way to reinforce the FACT that English spelling is a sound/symbol system.  Learning it as soon as possible is a big PLUS for any student.

OK…that’s it.  Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!  We did!!

Here is the website where you can find “Leap Frog Fridge Phonics.”  Have fun!!
